“ESS”, Tower Hamlets: bottom-lopped shield

“ESS” burglar alarm, Tower Hamlets • Here’s a rarely-seen shape that’s very similar to Banham’s proprietary shield, but with the crucial difference of having its bottom lopped off. Although ESS is an unexplained acronym, l happen to know that this psychedelic soundwave design belongs to Essex Security Services, who seem to regularly update their logo and sounders – not to be confused with ESS (Electronic & Security Services) in Northern Ireland, or ESS-Security Ltd of Leeds. Not the most exclusive set of initials, clearly. • Spotted: Brick Lane, Tower Hamlets, London, E1, England, 2006 • Politics: In the Labour constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow

  1. So lets play a much more fun game – what was the previous sounder? I can see a shadow of a maybe ex-alarm (admittedly it could easily have been a sign) just above the box… Its a large arc which doesnt leave too many candidates; presumably not an old Thorn as that suggests a huge gap in service… But maybe?

  2. Hi Vici, this external sounder/strobe was choosen by us for a couple of reasons.
We celebrated our 25th year as a company in 2004, and were looking for a chrome bell cover to reflect the “silver anniversary”.
We agreed an exclusivity arrangement for the South East with the manufacturers, CQR, for the chrome shield variant of their Multibox and have used this since.
You are right that we have updated our logo and bell box regularly as we like to keep the designs fesh and modern, although this one has stayed with us for nearly 8 years which is a record for bell covers here at ESS.

    • Thanks for the explanation Andy, that explains why I don’t see that shape around much! I have however found one other sounder with that enclosure, which was in North London – I’ll be featuring it in the next category.
