“A1 Alarms”, Southwark: straight

“A1 Alarms” burglar alarm, Southwark • The A1, running from London to York and Edinburgh largely following a straight ancient Roman route, is famously the UK’s longest numbered road. This company probably meant their name in the sense of “very good”, but seeing as I’ve found examples of their sounders in both London and York, perhaps they did have the highway in mind too. • Spotted: Bermondsey Street, Southwark, London, SE1, England, 2011 • Politics: In the Liberal Democrat constituency of Bermondsey and Old Southwark

  1. Yes, this particular A1 alarms was just a brand, although there are plenty of installers with the same name! Apart from the usual 2 wire shed alarms, I seem to remember by the 90s the only half recognisable as professional panel they did was the Advantage, kind of like a poor mans Optima, and a 2 zone jobbie that fitted into a 2 gang socket backplate, which was actually half decent for caravans and boats etc… as it ran off 10-15V DC but also used primary cells for backup as well, took hardly any power – half decent only as long as you threw away the PIR they supplied. Amongst many others Wickes and Neweys used to supply kits using the ‘Advantage’ plus one from Wickes using the 2 gang (‘A1 Model 2002?’) model I mentioned; albeit with either blank or their own branded bellbox. Ended up going T.U. by the late 90s I think, maybe an MBO or similar for a year or two, ended up as ‘Boardfinish Ltd. t/a A1 Alarms’. I think there was some link to very brief Oz ownership which this document seems to confirm; see p24
